Questions about this
How is Georgia property tax calculated?
Georgia assesses property at 40 percent of fair market value, then applies a millage rate set by your county, city and school district. A mill is one dollar per thousand dollars of assessed value. Because each jurisdiction sets its own rate every year, the same assessed value produces a different bill in Cherokee, Cobb, Fulton, Forsyth and Bartow.
What is the Georgia homestead exemption?
Georgia's statewide standard homestead exemption takes $2,000 off the assessed value of a home you live in as your primary residence. Counties and cities add their own exemptions on top, and those are often much larger and vary by jurisdiction. Check with your county tax commissioner for what applies where you are buying.
