What Is an ADU?
An accessory dwelling unit is a secondary, independent living space on the same lot as a primary home, built either attached to the main house, detached in the backyard, converted from a garage, or carved out of a basement. It typically includes its own kitchen, bathroom and entrance, which is what separates it from a finished room that's just part of the main home. Whether a given lot allows one, and under what rules, comes down to the local zoning ordinance, not a statewide standard.
