Falling behind on a mortgage payment does not automatically mean foreclosure is the only outcome. Servicers offer options such as a repayment plan, forbearance or a loan modification, and many borrowers qualify for at least one. Selling before the process moves further can also protect remaining equity and stop the situation from getting worse. Call your servicer and talk to an agent early, since the choices narrow the longer you wait.
