Do I have to pay capital gains tax on an inherited home?
Selling an inherited home rarely triggers a large capital gains bill, because federal law resets the taxable basis to what the property was worth around the date the previous owner died, not the original purchase price decades earlier. Tax applies only to the increase in value from that point forward, and heirs who sell within a year of inheriting often see little gain to report. A CPA should verify the actual basis and sale numbers, and a fresh valuation supports that work.
